Writing this in the summer of 2006, I'm 70 years old, married (to the same man for over 50 years!), and have 3 children and 14 grandchildren (ages 6 months to 20 years). In various phases of my life, I have been a librarian in an elementary school; run a media center in a dental school; graduated from law school, passed the bar but never practiced law; worked with a women's outdoor education group; got certified as an automobile mechanic; became a CPA and worked as an IRS agent; took a solo cross-country motorcycle camping trip; traveled around the country for two years in a motor home; and for our 5oth anniversary last year, my husband and I backpacked into our favorite backcountry site in Yosemite National Park. 10 years ago I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer which has metastasized to my lungs but has remained relatively stable. At this point cancer has become a chronic disease which requires periodic testing and watching (and all of the anxiety that goes along with it), but does not have a major impact on the quality of my life. Instead, it has opened up a new appreciation for life, gratitude for life's everyday miracles, and importance of my connections with those around me, and a wish to live fully in each moment. Life is full and as I follow my path, I wonder where this journey will take me. I am creating this journal to share some of my musings as I follow my path, reflect on my life, and celebrate the joy of living.
